Annual Data Science Symposium 2025

A full-day event bringing together researchers, practitioners and students for keynotes, poster sessions, and networking.

DASCLAB's Annual Data Science Symposium returned for its fifth edition on 14 February 2025, welcoming over 200 registered attendees to the University of Nairobi's Great Court. The symposium theme — "Data for Development: African Solutions to African Problems" — drew speakers and participants from 12 countries across the continent.

Keynote Speakers

The event opened with a keynote by Dr. Amara Okoro, Chief Data Officer at Pfizer Africa, on lessons from deploying predictive analytics in sub-Saharan healthcare systems. A second keynote addressed the ethical dimensions of AI in African contexts, delivered by Prof. Elena Rodriguez of Stanford's Human-Centred AI Institute.

Poster Session

The poster session featured 34 submissions from MSc and PhD students covering spatial epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance, deep learning for crop disease detection in maize, traffic flow modelling on Nairobi's arterial road network, and sentiment analysis of social media during the 2024 general elections.

Next Edition

The 2026 Symposium will expand to a two-day format and incorporate a hands-on hackathon. Calls for abstracts will open in September 2025.
