Application Of Computational Methods In Estimating Animal Abundance And Related Parameters
Animal abundance estimation is very fundamental due to expanding human
population and extensive destruction and alteration of habitats. As a result,
monitoring of populations is receiving emphasis in most parts of the world. The
control incorporates computational methods in estimating the population size of
animals. In this paper, we analyze three different methods of estimating animal
abundance and related parameters in environmetrics: capture-recapture method
which provides insightful information into the mechanisms of population change,
distance sampling which is more focused on measuring the actual size changes and
finally the telemetry method which uses modern technology in population
estimation. The results obtained investigate the effectiveness of these methods and
conclude that the choice of a method largely depends on the nature of the animals
under study.
