Analysis Of Road Accidents In Kenya For The Year 2016-2018 Based On Data From National Transport And Safety Authority (Ntsa).
Road accidents are one of the highest causes of death in the world. The road accidents and associated injuries affect about 30 million annually majorly in the developing countries such as Kenya. In Kenya, about 3,000 people die through the road accidents annually (Manyara, 2016). The accidents have a great negative impact in the social and economic lives of individuals, families and nations (HTI, 2017). This is due to the fact that the accidents lead to deaths, fatal injuries and even lifelong disabilities. This study sought to find out the variation of road accident incidents over the year, the affected, causes and extent of the effect of the road accidents. Data was obtained from the National Transport Authority website and analyzed using the R Graphics software. It was found that the accidents involve people in different states of life and using various means of transport and are caused by a variety of factors. The means of transport include walking, cycling and driving while the factors could be attributed to structural, vehicle and human errors (Mutune et al, 2017). The pedestrians, passengers and motorcyclists are the most affected in that order. It was also found that the accidents increase during the festive seasons due to the increased travelling and probable over indulgence of the people such as drivers in celebratory drinking. The study recommends actions to be taken at personal, national and global levels and concludes that road accidents are preventable if taken seriously.
